What is macular degeneration?

Macular degeneration is a chronic disease of the eye caused by fluid leaking from blood vessels lying under the retinal receptors, which causes loss of central vision. 35% of the population over 75 years of age have the disease. Age related macular degeneration is the most common vision loss in North America in those 50 and older. Over 15 million North Americans are affected by this disease.
